Unfortunately, we don’t live in a perfect world, and I always took being so blessed with ample resources for granted. It was when my team started working with teams in Jamaica that I saw how large the gap in funding and resources can be. However, I never really knew what to do about the issue until one night I was shopping at my local Jewel-Osco and it hit me. I was in the self-checkout line, and when I went to make my purchase, it asked me if I wanted to round up for charity, and then the ideas came snowballing. Once I knew a charity was the best engineered solution, I needed a name. I wanted it to relate to FIRST, but I wanted it not to just be something generic, and I wanted it to have some meaning behind it. One night while I was lying in bed thinking about a name, I wondered what Skip, my late Math tutor, team’s mentor, and the smartest guy I ever knew, would have called it. And then I realized, FIRST’s slogan is More Than Robots, and Skip’s last name was Moore. So, I put two and two together, and hence, Moore Than Robots was built.
